Fast and decisive reaction expected to Kosovo’s accession to Council of Europe – Serbian President

If Kosovo (which Serbia considers as part of their country) becomes a member state of the Council of Europe, Serbia's reaction will be fast and decisive, said Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, Radio Liberty reported on March 29.

Vučić did not provide details on Serbia's possible reaction, only assured that Belgrade was ready to negotiate.

"We will continue to talk," Serbian leader said.

"I am ready to listen to the opinion of the Assembly and the government. We will prepare and wait."

He added that the European initiative for Kosovo's accession to the Council of Europe does not include conditions for Pristina(city which is a territorial dispute between Kosovo and Serbia and Kosovo's capital).

"Despite the fact that European sanctions against Kosovo are formally in place due to the failure to fulfill the agreement(Ohrid Agreement between Kosovo and Serbia), Pristina officials participated in all Western international forums over the past year," Vucic added.

Kosovo's membership in Council of the European Union: what is known

Kosovo authorities applied for membership in the Council of Europe in May 2022.

Kosovo announced that the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe had decided to refer their membership application to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in May 2023.

Decision was supported by 33 members of the committee (representing 46 member states), seven countries voted against, and five abstained. Kosovo's Foreign Minister Donika Gërvalla-Schwarz called the decision historic.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić on March 24 said that his country may withdraw from the Council of Europe if its members allow Kosovo to join.

PACE Political Affairs and Democracy Committee recommended Kosovo to be invited to join the Council of Europe on March 27.
