Family's 'disgusting' response after littering at beachside park

A woman has recorded a shocking confrontation with a family of tourists, including a young boy who threatened her, after she approached them for reportedly leaving rubbish behind at a beach.

New Zealand woman Krista Curnow said she was enjoying an afternoon at Takapuna Beach, north of Auckland, when she watched about 12 Irish nationals leave their rubbish behind at a reserve.

“We approached the family to ask them if they can please not leave without picking up their rubbish, their response was basically if we have a problem then we can pick it up and that that’s what the council is for,” she wrote on Facebook Sunday.

“I approached the family to ask again if they could not disrespect our country while visiting and pick up their rubbish. They turned violent and even grandma and the child got involved saying they wanted to punch my head in.”

Ms Curnow shared two videos of her interaction with the family, including one which showed a shirtless young boy marching over to her and threatening her for arguing with his family.

“You swear to my uncle, I’ll knock your brains out,” the youngster snapped at her.

“Swear to my uncle again, swear to God. The cheek of ya. The cheek of ya,” he shouted, after the woman called the child a “naughty little s**t”.

“The mouth on that young boy – absolutely disgusting! What kind of role models are the parents allowing this sort of behaviour,” Ms Curnow said.

“We live in one of the most beautiful countries in the world, how dare people come to NZ and disrespect our country, this is our home,” she wrote in her post.

Ms Curnow said she reported the incident to the police, who told her the tourists were known to them.

“Police will be speaking with those involved and will be referring them to council with regard to their behaviour around the littering of rubbish,” Inspector Kevin McNaughton told www.stuff.co.nz.

An Irish national now living in Auckland who is not related to the family commented, saying she was “mortified” by the family’s behaviour.

“It’s a shame they’re letting their reputation slide on this side of the world. How embarrassing I’m so sorry you had to encounter Irish people treating New Zealand like this,” she added.
