'Shame on you': Man's family blames Trump for his death in his obituary

A man’s emotional obituary has raised eyebrows after his family blamed his coronavirus death on “selfish people who refused to follow medical advice”.

The family’s tribute to David W. Nagy was posted to various social media websites on Tuesday after being spotted by some eagle-eyed readers in Longview, Texas.

Mr Nagy died on July 22 in the ICU at Christus Good Shepherd Hospital after “suffering greatly from the ravages of the COVID-19 virus and the separation from his much loved family who were not allowed at his bedside,” according to the obit.

The Californian man who had moved to north Texas after retiring was just months away from his 70th birthday.

He leaves behind his “inconsolable” wife Stacey, five children and numerous grandchildren.

Mr Nagy’s family said his death was “needless” and they blame his passing and the thousands of other COVID deaths in Texas on President Donald Trump, the state’s Governor Greg Abbott and “all the other politicians who did not take this pandemic seriously and were more concerned with their popularity and votes than lives”.

“Also to blame are the many ignorant, self-centred and selfish people who refused to follow the advice of the medical professionals, believing their ‘right’ not to wear a mask was more important than killing innocent people,” the family said.

“Dave did everything he was supposed to do, but you did not. Shame on all of you, and may Karma find you all!” the obituary ended.

Texas’ soaring number of coronavirus cases have been a point of concern for months, as are the numerous videos published online showing people refusing to wear face coverings or abide by social distancing.

Mr Abbott’s decision to re-open restaurants, bars and public areas despite major concerns by medical professionals has been highly criticised.

Texas has recorded 442,014 COVID cases and 7,016 deaths, according to the state’s health department.

More than 155,000 people have died from coronavirus in the US since the virus was first identified in January.

Deaths rose by over 25,000 in July and cases doubled in 19 states during the month.
