Family devastated after three dogs poisoned with pesticide

Perth grandparents are struggling to break the news to their two-year-old grandson that his pet dog is dead after being deliberately poisoned.

Garrie Fowler, of Port Kennedy, thought his dogs, Mr Bear and Jessie, were safe in the backyard along with his grandson’s dachshund Slinky.

But the three were poisoned on Monday by an agricultural pesticide.

Mr Bear and Jessie made it through following a $2600 vet bill but Slinky died.

“(He was) only 12 months old and a bad way to die,” Mr Fowler said.

He believes someone reached through a gap in his fence and poisoned the dogs.

The dogs barked when people came near the house but the grandfather said he’s never had any complaints.

Baldivis Vet Hospital’s Dr Hubert Hiemstra described the pesticide as a “nasty thing”.

“You get a constriction of the airways – so bronchial constriction and they really struggle to breath,” Dr Hiemstra said.

“It’s a horrible thing to imagine.”

Another family nearby said their dogs were also poisoned.

The poisonings have been reported to the RSPCA.
