Zoe Kravitz calls Miley Cyrus a rebel

As the daughter of a rock star, Zoe Kravitz knows what she's talking about when she calls Miley Cyrus a rebel.

Kravitz, daughter of legendary rocker Lenny Kravitz, is the frontwoman with band LolaWolf who are supporting Cyrus on her Bangerz tour Down Under.

Kravitz says before she went on tour with Cyrus she went to catch her show with a bandmate and was pleasantly surprised by what she saw.

"Me and Jimmy (Giannopoulos) went to go see her show in Philadelphia and we didn't know what to expect," she told AAP.

"She's an artist. She's so inspired ... and so involved in the production and art of her show."

While Cyrus is criticised for being too provocative, Kravitz said she finds her attitude inspiring.

"She takes chances and some people don't like that but she's more than just a pop star, she's an artist," she said.

"She does exactly what she wants to do. She's a rebel."

While Lolawolf's music has hip-hop and tribal elements, Kravitz actually sees how the band's music and Cyrus's complement each other.

"There's an alternative pop sensibility in both kinds of music," she said.

Kravitz and her bandmates were soaking up the rays in Byron Bay before their support slot for Cyrus on Wednesday night.

While they were there, Kravitz - who is also an actress - spent some time on the beach reading a script.

She is used to juggling her talents, having acted in major films such as X-Men: First Class and Divergent, and will appear in the upcoming Mad Max remake, Mad Max: Fury Road.

"It all happens at once so you have to find ways to balance," she said.

She said her band members have even come out to locations where she films to record music with her.

While the original Mad Max was filmed in Australia, Kravitz decamped to a different continent to film the remake. And she says people can expect great things from the film, which stars Charlize Theron.

"It was a very long shoot in Africa," she said.

"The first one was made in `79 as an independent film... it broke records for some of the most daring stunts... so the fact they could do that in `79 with no money, imagine what we can do in 2015 with a studio behind it."
