'Sexually frustrated': Bar's savage response to customer's one star review

For as long as the Internet has been in existence, it feels like online reviews have been a thorn in the hospitality industry’s side.

While most restaurants, cafes and bars accept the tired old mantra of the customer always being right, one bar in the United Kingdom appears to have had enough of online review culture.

In a recent rant posted to Facebook, the Oxton Bar and Kitchen in the north west English city of Birkenhead, said the customer who left them a one-star review was “sexually frustrated”, a “twat” and had “an obvious fetish for over 70s pornography”.

The offending review which was posted to TripAdvisor by someone who identified themselves as ‘James’, was written in February but appears to have only come to the pub’s attention this week.

“After seven years of loyal patronage to the OBK, I was unfortunate enough to order the cheese board (for heaven’s sake don’t do it), it arrived via our unfriendly host Angela where it was discarded on our table with a bang,” the reviewer wrote.

“I’ve seen better spreads on Over70s.com. Anaemic crackers, putrid celery and cheese from an over-milked cow.

“With trepidation it was time to pay the bill, I approached the bar with caution. Angela had removed ‘it’ from the bill, like she’d done me a favour!”

He finished his review by saying that despite the bad platter and bad service on this occasion, his previous seven years of patronage to the pub had been “excellent”, and added that he’d be back.

The restaurant let loose on the customer’s bad review, taking particular issue with the fact James had supposedly been visiting for seven years and enjoying great service but in all that time hadn’t left a single positive review.

“James here, is a complete twat,” the bar’s Facebook post read.
”Not because he has an obvious fetish for over 70’s pornography. Not because he thinks Lauren is called Angela. Not because he thinks our cheese is sh**... No James is a twat because... In 7 years of ‘excellent service’, why have you not left one single positive review for us?

”Yet one cheeseboard not to your liking (which we took off the bill?) and you give us a one star review.

“You say you’ll be back! Come back when you’ve given us a positive review for each of the excellent experiences you say you’ve had over the last 7 years, otherwise don’t bother.”

The restaurant went to take aim at negatives reviews in general which began by saying how good their previous visit to an establishment was before going onto leave a bad review for the one time it was bad.

”This sh** keeps me awake at night,” the bar’s owner said.

”I employ 23 staff. We all have families to feed. By all means leave us a crap review if you don’t like us, but don’t ignore the positive experiences, or flit over them in a one star review.

The post went on to say online review sites like Trip Advisor were “simply an avenue for keyboard warriors to vent their sexually frustrated bad moods on business owners, and an arena for fraudulent positive reviews to negate humanities desire to complain more than they compliment.”
