Employee fired for OK emoji reply to boss

An employee was reportedly given the sack after using an emoji in a group chat that rubbed her boss up the wrong way.

The woman responded with an “OK” emoji in a WeChat group last week after her boss asked if she could send through some meeting documents.

Her boss was not impressed, scolding the woman, who worked in a bar in Changsha, central China, for not knowing the appropriate “rules”, The Star reported.

“You should use text to reply to the message if you have received it, don’t you know the rules?,” they wrote in a reply.

“Is this your acknowledgement of receipt?”.

Moments later he encouraged her to get in contact with Human Resources and arrange her resignation.

The OK emoji is a hand showing the thumb and pointer joined together in a circle, while the other fingers splayed out.

The employee confirmed to online platform Btime that her employment was in the process of being terminated.

“This is a real case, the resignation is still processing,” she said.

“I have worked for many years and this is my first encounter with this kind of stupid situation. I am good-tempered therefore I didn't retaliate.”

The woman said her co-workers had agreed the manager was out of line in their harsh penalty.

Screenshots from the chat went viral on blogging site Weibo, attracting more than 280 million views.
