Elderly man charged with lighting bushfire that burnt through 40 hectares

An elderly man has been arrested after it’s alleged he caused a bushfire on the NSW South Coast which burnt through more than 40 hectares.

Police were called to a home on Araluen Road in Deua River Valley on Thursday about 12pm following reports of a fire.

The fire quickly spread to Wandera State Forest and is continuing to burn through more than 40 hectares of bushland, NSW Police said in a statement.

A 71-year-old has been arrested and charged with light fire for land clearance/fire break without permit/notice, and owner permit fire to escape land, cause damage.

The charges come after police spoke with him at the Araluen Road property on Friday.

He’s been granted strict condition bail and will face Moruya Local Court on January 10.
