Driver's miraculous escape after crashing truck during coughing fit

A truck driver has escaped death after a coughing fit caused him to lose control of his semi-trailer, sending it head first into trees and a fence.

While driving north along the Cobb Highway in Mathoura, in the NSW Riverina, the unknown driver started uncontrollably coughing and swerved off the road, leaving the big rig looking a little worse for wear.

Photos show the extent of the wreckage, but the lucky driver walked away from the accident with nothing but “scratches on his right elbow and an elevated heart rate”.

NSW Police say medical conditions resulting in accidents are common but in this case, a coughing fit is quite rare and so is walking away unscathed from such a drastic-looking crash.

“This certainly is threading the needle,” Traffic and Highway Patrol Command NSW Police Force stated in a Facebook Post.

People commenting on the Facebook page cannot believe the driver escaped unharmed and have been urging him to take advantage of his good fortune.

“Lottery ticket time for this very lucky driver,” said one person.

One poster pointed out that the load the truck was carrying was still intact: “He knows how to tie a load down that’s for sure.”

Nobody was injured in the accident and mandatory drug and alcohol testing has confirmed the driver was not under the influence while driving.

The driver is now reportedly recovering from the terrifying ordeal at home.
