Drivers licenses to be linked to national facial recognition database

Your drivers licence could soon be linked to a new facial recognition database.

Millions of driver’s licences will start to be loaded into the Department of Home Affairs new biometric database within months, which every Australian drivers licence could be linked within 18 months, The Courier-Mail has revealed.

A nationwide rollout of the technology will aid in fighting crime and help authorities respond to contagious disease outbreaks.

Privacy has been raised as a concern, along with the vulnerabilities of biometrics.

The proposed database still needs to be approved by parliament.
