An alleged drunk driver is lucky to be alive after his car was hit by a passenger train in Melbourne’s north.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Epping and Settlement roads at Thomastown shortly after 3am on Sunday after reports a car had driven straight through the boom gates and had been hit by a passenger train.

The driver and sole occupant was not injured in the crash, and returned a positive breath test reading of more than twice the legal limit.

The 36-year-old man is now expected to be charged with drink driving and traffic related offences.

None of the passengers of the train were injured in the crash.
