Driver cops $5,000 fine for 'stupid' 4WD act caught on camera

The reckless move has prompted warnings from police over road safety at the beach.

A Brisbane woman has copped a $5,805 fine over an alleged 4WD stunt on a popular beach over the weekend.

The 24-year-old copped the hefty bill for five traffic infringements at Rainbow Beach on Saturday, Queensland Police confirmed to Yahoo News.

The alleged dangerous driving incident was captured on camera, with five people seen hanging from or sitting on top of a silver Toyota Landcruiser as the driver sped on the sand alongside another vehicle. The clip drew the ire of angry locals and police after it was posted on social media.

Police hit out at 'stupid' behaviour

Wide Bay Burnett Police Acting Superintendent Paul Algie hit out at the driver of the car for their “stupid driving behaviour”, the Courier Mail reports.

Gympie Patrol Group Inspector Brad Inskip said in a statement motorists need to remember the same road rules apply when driving on the beach. “Road safety is everyone’s responsibility, and I would like to thank the members of the public who assisted with providing information on this incident,” Inspector Inskip said.

“Don’t put your life, or the lives of others, at risk – drive safely, and responsibly, especially when you’re on our beaches.”

Police tips for safe beach driving:

  • Slow down around parked vehicles: children can run out unexpectedly

  • Be aware of hazards, exposed rocks, weed banks and large holes left behind by keen sandcastle builders; they can trick even the most experienced drivers

  • It is illegal to travel outside the vehicle. This includes hanging out of windows or riding in tray backs

  • Everyone in the vehicle must wear a seatbelt when the car is moving

  • Never drive too fast, tired or hungover
