Fire fighter adopts dog abandoned by family after devastating blaze

A dog who was so severely burnt in a house fire that her owners left her at the vet to be euthanised has been rescued by a firefighter who related to the animal’s traumatic experience.

Lexi Ann was only able to escape from her burning Minnesota home when the plastic kennel she was in melted around her from the intense heat.

Leaving her litter of puppies behind, Lexi Ann managed to escape the home miraculously in one piece, before it burned to the ground in January.

Despite her family leaving her at the vet to be put to sleep, one nurse “fell in love” with Lexi Ann’s “sweetness and joy” and contacted United States’ adoption service Ruff Start for help.

A heartwarming post from the rescue group on Saturday shared the wonderful news Lexi Ann had been adopted by a firefighter named Travis, who had been following the dog’s journey on Instagram.

Despite Travis and his family living in Indiana, and the service not normally allowing interstate adoption, Ruff Start could not deny how perfectly the pair were suited.

“This Saturday Travis and his family brought an RV 11 hours to meet Lexi Ann, including their dog Odin! It was an instant love connection and Lexi found her forever family,” the Facebook post read.

“Her dad is a full-time firefighter and connected with Lexi due to the trauma he knows fire can impact on the lives of humans and animals.

“He actually has pulled his fair share of animals out of fires, many of which were not as lucky as Lexi Ann.”

Several photos of the pair’s first meeting accompanied the post, which included Travis’ other dog, Odin.

“It was an instant love connection and Lexi found her forever family,” the post said.

Travis planned on taking the new addition to his family to a camp that helped people heal after being seriously burnt.
