Dog dies, two rescued after being tied up in extreme heat

A dog tethered in a Brisbane backyard in intense heat has died due to heatstroke.

The pet was discovered deceased at a Boronia Heights property, south of the city, in soaring temperatures on Monday alongside another severely dehydrated dog who was seized from its owner.

The two dogs were tethered using heavy chains at the property and without water, according to RSPCA Queensland’s Michael Beatty.

“You just shake your head its in this sort of heat,” Mr Beatty told Yahoo7 News.

Another dog was seized at a property in nearby Marsden on Monday, also on a short tether and with its mouth taped shut.

Mr Beatty said taping the dog’s mouth shut could have easily killed it with it struggling to breath and drink water.

He said he was dumbfounded as to why someone would choose to tape a dog’s mouth shut but speculated it may have been due to excessive barking.

Mr Beatty warned Queensland residents over the dangers of tethering your pet, especially in extreme heat.

“If you leave any animal in this heat, especially tethered and it can’t reach shade and water, it will die,” he said.

“They’ll die very quickly.”

Mr Beatty said leads can easily become caught in garden plants or furniture, restricting access to much needed water and shade.

“It’s predicted 36 degrees in Brisbane today,” he warned.

Mr Beatty confirmed the incidents are currently under investigation and that both owners were likely to be prosecuted.

A person found guilty of animal cruelty under the Animal Care and Protection Act 2001 can face a fine of up to $260,000 and three years’ imprisonment.
