The final Vivid drone show in Sydney has been cancelled due to “forecasted weather”, despite disappointed attendees reporting only overcast conditions.

Organisers announced the keystone event of the annual light and culture festival would be cancelled just half an hour before it was due to get underway.

Vivid Sydney stated on Instagram the drone show would “not proceed this evening” and would not be rescheduled as it was the last night of Vivid events.

“We apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your understanding. Please be patient when exiting,” organisers wrote about 9.20pm on Saturday.

The decision quickly drew the ire of attendees who braved cold and wet conditions to attend the even, with many pointing to the lack of apparent rainfall.

“Since 9.10pm, no rain at the Opera House,” one person wrote.

Another added: “Sitting here at Macquarie Chair and weather is fine. Thanks for the notice. 9.12pm”.

Many attendees vented frustration at having travelled from far away to attend the show.

“We have come all the way from western suburbs just to see the drone show, and there is no expected rain according to the weather. How disappointing,” one person said.

“Such a shame. Drove all the way to Sydney from (Brisbane) just for the show and it’s so disappointing,” another person said.

It comes after the Vivid Drone show came under fire last week when more attendees than expected descended on Circular Quay, triggering mass crowds.
