DeSantis joins House GOP calls for Mayorkas impeachment

GOP presidential candidate Ron DeSantis has joined House Republicans’ calls to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

“Yes, Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas should be impeached,” DeSantis posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, Saturday. “Mayorkas has disregarded his oath of office and the Constitution by letting in 8 million illegal aliens. One of the reasons we have such bad outcomes in Washington is because no one is ever held accountable!”

House Republicans kicked off a series of impeachment hearings against Mayorkas last week. A Homeland Security Committee hearing last Wednesday focused on the “havoc” Biden administration immigration policy has caused in the U.S.

Chair Mark Green (R-Tenn.) said during the hearing that Mayorkas “is the architect of the devastation that we have witnessed for nearly three years.”

“What we’re seeing here is a willful violation of his oath of office,” he added.

House Foreign Affairs Chair Michael McCaul (R-Texas) has said Mayorkas could be impeached by “by the end of this month.”

“If you look at the founding fathers, when they talked about impeachment, they talk about abuse of power, dereliction of duty…Mayorkas on day one rescinded ‘Remain in Mexico,’” McCaul said, referring to a Trump administration policy that forced those seeking asylum to await proceedings in Mexico.

“That means instead of arresting, detaining, and removing illegal aliens, they have released them into our society by re-instituting catch and release,” he added. “This has caused injurious harm to the fabric of America.”

DeSantis has previously said that if elected president, he would send the military to the southern border and authorize service members at the border to use deadly force against drug cartels.

“I’m going to have the military at the border, 100 percent,” he said in September.
