The grieving dad of a 12-year old boy who died after being hit by a car on Friday has shared what he said to the driver at the "horrifying" scene.

Kye Duclos was walking home from school just after 4.30 pm when he crossed "built-up traffic" on a road in Mulgrave, situated in Melbourne's southeast. His family were told it was unlikely Kye would have had clear sight of the second lane when he stepped out onto the road.

"He crossed without the green pedestrian light and was unfortunately hit by a car," his dad Michael said in an emotional statement online.
