Crying kids rescued from hot car after driver 'passes out at the wheel'

Two kids have been rescued from a hot car after the driver passed out behind the wheel north of Melbourne.

A resident of Kalkallo told 3AW he noticed a car parked outside his Klandy Drive home on Sunday about midday.

He said he could hear children crying more than two hours later as the temperature reached 32C.

The man claimed when he checked the car he found the driver passed out in the front seat but breathing. He tried to wake him but to no avail.

He called police and an ambulance while removing the children from the hot car.

“The kids were in pretty bad condition because the aircon wasn’t on,” he told 3AW.

The man’s wife gave the kids juice and water.

“The ambulance people were saying that if no one went to the car another 20 to 25 minutes they would be fully dehydrated and they wouldn’t be able to cry after that,” he told 3AW.

A Victoria Police spokesman told Yahoo News Australia the driver was treated by paramedics at the scene but didn’t require transport to hospital.

“No one was injured,” the spokesman said.

“The male in the car was arrested on unrelated outstanding warrants and the children were released into the care of a family member.”
