A female Queensland Police officer has shot dead a wanted criminal after he brutally bashed her inside a hospital.

Tyson Jessen, 28, complained of chest pain after being taken into custody on Friday, and remained under police guard in Ipswich Hospital for 24 hours.

Jessen had been arrested over violent crimes he committed in Victoria, including lighting a disabled man on fire in 2008 and numerous offences involving firearms.

Seven News understands one of the officers guarding Jessen had left the room on Saturday night when Jessen called over Senior Constable Leesa Richardson.

With his legs shackled he pushed her to the ground, beat her repeatedly and smashed her head on the floor until she fired her weapon.

It’s believed multiple shots were fired.

Hospital staff immediately began treating Jessen’s wounds but he died at the scene.

A nurse was also hit after walking in on the attack.

Snr Cst Richardson was photographed battered and bruised in bed. She also suffered a concussion and is currently recovering at home.

Ian Leavers from the Queensland Police Union said the officer’s injuries could have been worse.

“We are very, very lucky we did not have a police officer murdered last night,” Mr Leavers said.

The incident remains under investigation.
