Glenn Maxwell's confession about Test cricket return amid six-year absence

Glenn Maxwell has conceded that the chances of him breaking back into the Test fold this summer are slim but the all-rounder believes he would be a real asset for the tour of Sri Lanka in 2025. Maxwell is known for his white-ball cricket but has played seven Tests for Australia from 2012 to 2017, all of which came on overseas tours.

The Aussie all-rounder says it is disappointing he hasn't been able to play a home Test series as he believes he has more to give in the five-day format and hopes he can get a chance to prove it against Sri Lanka in February 2025. "Obviously, I would have loved to have played a Test at home," Maxwell told SEN Mornings.

"I'm quite understanding the circumstances of the current side. They're playing some really good cricket, they’re World Test champions. There are not a lot of spots up for grabs as far as Tests at home, but I know that when it does come to a subcontinent tour I can be a real viable option to hopefully fill a role in that side.

"I don't think there's another subcontinent tour until early 2025. So, I'll keep trying to plug away and hopefully get an opportunity at that stage. But yeah, it would have been nice to play one at home, it's where I played all my First-Class cricket and it felt like I toiled away for a few years there. It's something that I wish I would have been able to do. But circumstances and timing I probably was more preferred in the white-ball area."

Glenn Maxwell says to focus on Australia's achievements

When asked about his thoughts on the ongoing war of words between Mitchell Johnson, David Warner and chief selector George Bailey, Maxwell refused to pour fuel on the fire. The all-rounder says fans need to instead focus on celebrating that Australia are the World Test champions and recent ODI World Cup winners.

"I'm not going to throw my name into some headlines about this," Maxwell said. "But Davey's been an absolute champion of Australian cricket for a long period of time and the selectors were pretty clear on what they thought of it (selecting him). I'm looking forward to seeing Davey in that first Test and him making a lot of runs this summer. I think coming into this first Test, we've just got to make sure that as Australians we're supporting our team and we're celebrating how successful this team has been over the two-year period of the World Test Championship cycle."

Johnson launched an extraordinary attack on Warner last weekend, saying he didn't deserve to be in the Test side let alone get a heroes farewell at the SCG this summer. The fast-bowling great said Warner still hadn't taken full responsibility for his role in the sandpaper scandal of 2018 and suggested chief selector Bailey was too close to the situation as he had only recently retired from playing.
