Covid Victoria: Biggest case spike in over a week

Victoria has recorded 25 new locally acquired Covid-19 cases on Sunday as Melbourne faces a potential third week of lockdown.

Worryingly, 13 of the cases have spent time in the community while infectious and four remain under investigation and unlinked at this stage.

Sunday's total is the highest since 29 cases were recorded on August 7.

Health authorities are now eyeing a third week of lockdown as infections continue to spread across Melbourne, the Herald Sun reports.

Health authorities 'very concerned' over mystery cases

Victoria's secretary of contact tracing Kate Matson said on Saturday there were eight mystery cases in focus from the City of Melbourne, Glenroy, Melton South, Middle Park, West Brunswick and Wynham Vale, as well as those identified in Newport and West Footscray.

"We are very concerned about what we're seeing across Melbourne," she said.

"We won't have unlinked cases if people come forward to get testing as soon as they possibly can, at the earliest sign of symptoms."

Ms Matson said there were more than 14,000 primary close contacts across Victoria. Some 650 had been cleared over the past couple of days while the state's household engagement program had conducted a record 1277 visits on Friday.

Melbourne is in the second week of its sixth lockdown, brought on to contain several Delta variant outbreaks.

More to come.
