Countryfile presenter Adam Henson said he almost caused a riot at a school after bringing sheep into an assembly - because the children had never seen one before.

Henson, 58, said it was sad so many British youngsters hadn’t seen parts of the countryside and hopes the curriculum can be shaken up to change things, calling for the introduction of a GCSE in agriculture.

Speaking to Somerset Life magazine, he said: “I’m not an old farmer with baler and twine holding up my corduroy trousers, but I’m a farmer who is passionate about educating people about the countryside and explaining where our food comes from.

“If you grow up in the countryside you are used to the sights and sounds of a farm - but for those people who live in cities, they just don’t understand rural life in the same way.

“Recently I took a few sheep into a school assembly in Birmingham.

“The headmaster had to bring in extra staff and limit the number of children who were in the room because he was convinced that we’d have a riot on our hands.

“Sadly, so many children have never seen a sheep before.”

Research by the Bluestone National Park in 2018 found that 27 per cent of city-dwelling children aged between six and 11 had never encountered a sheep.

Similarly, a survey in 2020 by Jordans Cereals found that children were disconnected from food production, as one in 10 children believed that carrots originated in the supermarket.

Henson said: “I would love to see a GCSE in agriculture introduced.

“Thankfully there are many others in the field of media and farming who are also keen to push for this too.

“I’m eager to educate people in the best way that I can.”
