Which countries recognise Palestine? Spain, Ireland and Norway add names to the list

Ireland, Norway and Spain are all set to recognise Palestine as a state, joining at least 140 members of the United Nations in doing so.

All three nations said on Wednesday that they would recognise Palestine by May 28.

Norwegian prime minister Jonas Gahr Støre said: “There will be no peace in the Middle East without a two-state solution. There can be no two-state solution without a Palestinian state.

“In other words, a Palestinian state is a prerequisite for achieving peace in the Middle East.”

Spanish PM Pedro Sanchez said: “We are going to recognise Palestine for many reasons and we can sum that up in three words – peace, justice and consistency,” he said.

“We have to make sure that the two-state solution is respected and there must be mutual guarantees of security.

“It is essential that the two sides negotiate for peace and it is for this reason that we recognise Palestine.”

Israel has hit back at the countries recognising Palestine. Foreign minister Israel Katz said that the moves show that “terrorism pays”.

It means that the UK is now one of 49 nations that does not recognise Palestine. These are all of the countries that do recognise it as a state.
