‘Could be’: Big call on alleged killer cop
The solicitor for alleged killer-cop Beau Lamarre-Condon has said the double murder charges against his client “could be” defendable.
Mr Lamarre-Condon was charged with the murders of Channel 10 presenter Jesse Baird and his boyfriend Qantas flight attendant Luke Davies at a Paddington sharehouse in February.
The bodies of Mr Baird and Mr Davies were found inside surfboard bags buried on a remote property near Goulburn in the state’s southern tablelands following a one-week search.
Mr Lamarre-Condon did not appear in court via videolink as his case was briefly mentioned inside Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court on Tuesday.
The court heard that prosecutors had served parts of the brief of evidence on Mr Lamarre-Condon’s legal team.
The matter will return to court in June when prosecutors will serve the remainder of the brief.
Outside court on Tuesday, Mr Lamarre-Condon’s lawyer John Walford said his client was doing “okay” in prison.
Asked if the charges were “defendable”, Mr Walford said: “They could be.”
Mr Walford previously flagged that the mental health of his client could play a part in the case.
Investigators allege the couple were killed by Mr Lamarre-Condon using a police firearm.
Police allege the killings followed “predatory” behaviour by Mr Lamarre-Condon, who had been in a brief relationship with Mr Baird months before the alleged murders.
Mr Lamarre-Condon is in custody on remand at Silverwater Prison since handing himself into police in February and being charged with two counts of murder.
The couple’s bodies were allegedly still under a tarpaulin in the courtyard when Mr Baird’s housemates returned home later that evening to find the home in disarray.
Last month Mr Lamarre-Condon was sacked from the NSW Police Force.
The matter will return to court on June 18.
