On June 1, Costco sent an announcement to members it identified as having purchased packaged cheese slices that the store has voluntarily removed from shelves out of “an abundance of caution.”

The letter, which was penned by Mike Bever, Executive Vice President and Chief Supply Chain Officer at Tillamook (the cheese's producer) stated that routine food safety and quality assurance processes discovered “a very small quantity of gray and black plastic pieces that may be present in a limited quantity of Monterey Jack Cheese that is included in the 32 oz. package of Tillamook Monterey Jack and Tillamook Colby Jack cheese slices.”

The announcement did not specify exactly how many packages may have been affected, but we do know that the dual packs of Monterey Jack and Colby Jack were sold at Costco locations in the Northwest region.

The affected cheese was sold in 32-ounce twin-pack packages that contain Tillamook Colby Jack cheese slices on one side and Tillamook Monterey Jack cheese slices on the other. The product was sold in Costco warehouses between May 9 and May 31, 2024 but packages may still be in consumers’ homes.

How To Identify the Recalled Cheese From Costco

The cheese was produced only for Costco locations in the Northwest region. To check if you have the affected product, look for the following identifiers: The packaging will have the item number 651195 on it as well as a “Best If Used By” date of October 22, 2024.

Costco and Tillamook urge consumers who still have the item to refrain from consuming it and return the product to their local Costco for a full refund. For those who have already consumed the product and have had no issues, Bever says, “You do not need to take any action, as the likely presence of the foreign plastic material is very minimal.”
