Coronavirus Victoria: Cases remain above five for second day

Victoria continues to record daily coronavirus cases above five as Melburnians eagerly wait to see which lockdown restrictions will be eased.

On Sunday, the state confirmed seven new infections and no deaths, keeping the state toll at 817 and the national toll at 905.

This is the second day in a row Victoria has recorded case numbers above five, but the all-important, 14-day rolling case average has dropped to 4.6 for Melbourne, which is below the 5 that Victorian authorities have long wanted to trigger the next step out of lockdown.

The regional average is at 0.2 while there are nine cases with an unknown source in Melbourne.

Premier Daniel Andrews warned the seven cases which were confirmed on Saturday could present an obstacle to easing restrictions.

The premier is set to announce changes to restrictions on Sunday.

"I just want to caution people from banking that tomorrow I'll be making a whole series of detailed announcements about opening up," he told reporters on Saturday.

Some 800 residents in Melbourne’s northern suburbs have been sent into isolation after a child who was meant to be in quarantine returned to school.

More than 20,000 warnings have been sent via text and email to taxi and Uber drivers who might have visited the area, asking they go and get tested.

Health workers are knocking on doors and three new testing sites in the area have opened up.

More to come.
