Part time, gig jobs rise more than 20 per cent across the world
Thousands of Australians have lost their jobs, been stood down or have had their hours cut in the space of a few weeks.
As more and more businesses shut down as federal and state governments tighten their measures to control the coronavirus pandemic, these unemployed numbers are set to rise.

And while the government has created a $550-a-fortnight safety net for those who have been left unemployed, there are still some sectors of Australia that are not only hiring but are in desperate need of extra staff.
Jobs search engine Adzuna, which aggregates job listings across several job ad platforms, reported a 20 per cent drop in average new daily postings between 1 to 15 March. At the same time, however, the number of part-time and gig vacancies have risen by 22 per cent across the globe, meaning there are small pockets of opportunities.

NAB hires another 400 customer support staff
NAB has announced it is hiring another 400 to its customer service department to deal with the task of following up with customers who have paused repayments on 80,000 home loans.
The extra 400 new positions bring the total number of additions to the customer contact teams to 1,000, the major bank said in a statement.
NAB bankers will call as many customers as possible to get a deeper understanding of their circumstances, said NAB chief customer experience officer Rachel Slade.
In the call, the support team member will outline the customer’s current position in regards to their home loan, the impact of the repayment pause to their loan balance and discuss plans for the months ahead.
“We know many of our customers will continue to feel the impact of Covid-19 for a long time and our expanded team will mean we can be available to support them through this,” said Slade.

Australian government launches Jobs Hub
The federal government has consolidated job openings from several of some of Australia’s biggest employers and created a new site where you can browse job opportunities by employer or by location (state). You’ll find it on the Department of Education, Skills and Employment, called Jobs Hub.
“While many businesses have been adversely affected by COVID-19 and are reducing their workforces, there are some areas of the economy which have an increased demand for workers,” the website states.
“This includes jobs in health and care sectors, transport and logistics, some areas of retail, mining and mining services, manufacturing, agriculture and government sectors, among others. The Jobs Hub helps you find advertised vacancies.”
Australian government roles are also advertised here as well, categorised by state.
Coles needs a further 5,000 workers
Coles has recruited more than 7000 people in just two weeks, but has now revealed it needs a further 5,000 employees to meet customer demand.
These roles include store team members to serve customers and restock shelves in Coles supermarkets and liquor stores, customer service agents to deliver orders to Coles online customers, and more than 100 trade-qualified bakers for our in-store bakeries.
Woolies opens up 20,000 new positions
Woolworths has announced it is looking to fill 20,000 roles across its supermarket, e-commerce, supply chain and drinks businesses over the next month.
The new positions have opened up due to the “unprecedented demand” as the coronavirus epidemic sees shoppers clear shelves and seek to purchases supermarket items online.
“These new roles will not only help us better serve the increase in demand we’re seeing in stores right now, but also allow us to scale up home delivery operations in the months ahead,” said Woolworths Group CEO Brad Banducci.
5,000 short-term roles will be offered to Qantas employees taking leave without play, he added.
Domino’s to hire 2,000 ‘delivery experts’
Pizza chain Domino’s has announced it will be hiring 2,000 workers as Australians unable to dine in at cafes and restaurants increasingly turn to takeaway and delivery options.
The company is seeking “thousands of team members to help deliver hot meals to the community during the COVID-19 pandemic”, according to a statement by the chain.
Domino’s ANZ CEO Nick Knight said it was a privilege to be able to stay open during the coronavirus crisis.
“We also know that a hot meal, friendly face and reassurance that a customer’s meal has been prepared taking all necessary precautions is more essential now than ever before – and we need friendly faces to deliver,” he said.

NSW Government to hire 1,000 communication specialists
As state and federal governments deliver updates to the public that change by the hour, NSW Government Premier Gladys Berejiklian has said it is hiring 1,000 communications specialist jobs, with further details to be announced in the future.
“Today when we announced we're employing an extra 1,000 people to support us in the community activity, that means we're employing more people,” Berejiklian said this morning on ABC News.
“We appreciate the pressure on jobs. Jobs for us in New South Wales is the absolute focus. And I will foreshadow that New South Wales in the coming days will be announcing further measures to support jobs.”
Ranstad puts call-out for nurses to work the phones
Recruitment agency Randstad has seen a sharp uptick in demand for certain healthcare roles as the health epidemic worsens.
Trend analysis by Randstad has revealed a “huge demand” for nurses in call centres and claimed Randstad Healthcare had more than 1,000 live jobs.
While visiting the jobs website may appear as though there are only 25 jobs in the health and medical sector Yahoo Finance can confirm that there are “hundreds” of openings for the coronavirus hotline consultant role.
Randstad has also seen a peak in childcare professionals and education jobs, particularly for teachers who can use digital online teaching platforms.
Coronavirus jobs in healthcare
The twin factors of an ageing population combined with the coronavirus health epidemic has contributed to a shortage in Australia’s healthcare system.
“Healthcare is one clear example of an industry that is performing strongly in the current climate. Healthcare has been a boom industry for years but the current crisis will push the sector to its limits,” said Indeed APAC economist Callum Pickering.
“This includes stronger demand for doctors and nurses, along with other healthcare professionals such as occupational therapists.”
Adzuna reported a 67 per cent increase in the number of nursing jobs in March compared to January and a stunning 197 per cent for health job ads in Australia.
“With the COVID-19 outbreak we have also started seeing jobs being listed as a Healthcare operator, hotline consultant, and registered nurses for the testing clinics related to the coronavirus,” said Adzuna Australia country manager Tejas Deshpande.
For instance, health insurers such as Medibank that have set up Covid-19 hotlines need phone operators.
A sweep of casual jobs on Seek and Indeed also reveal that there is a high demand for administration assistants for healthcare facilities, such as doctor’s offices and hospitals.
Though they have cut their opening hours, supermarkets are on overdrive as they struggle to keep up with the heightened demand from shoppers who are panic-buying.
“The stockpiling of food and other essentials appears to have created strong demand for workers. Coles, for example, has announced plans to hire 5,000 more casual staff to stock shelves,” said Pickering.
According to Woolworths’ jobs website, there are more than than 900 roles open across Australia and New Zealand, some of which include customer assistants, online assistants, night-shift shelf stackers and qualified bakers.
Delivery and labourer jobs
With pubs, clubs, restaurants and cafes told to shut their doors, many eateries – including top-class restaurants – have begun to offer takeaway services in order to keep business going in some way.
That’s created an uptick in demand for delivery drivers, couriers as well as casual labourers. Here’s Uber Eats’, Deliveroo’s, and Menulog’s page to become a delivery partner. (You should note that Menulog doesn’t take a commission on your earnings.)
BHP has announced it is hiring 1,500 additional contractors such as machinery operators, truck and equipment drivers, boilermakers, trades assistants, electricians, cleaners and warehousing roles across WA, Queensland, NSW and South Australia. The mining giant will seek to offer permanent roles after the six-month contracts are up.
Social services, call centre jobs
The community services and development sector has been notable in its growth over the last 12 months as compared to the overall national trend of declining job ad growth, according to Seek.
Within this sector, child and family support workers, case managers, facility managers, care coordinators, social workers and psychologists are in-demand.
While many of these roles will require qualifications, there are some job openings for office assistants. Aged and health care provider St Vincent’s Health is also hiring multiple administration officers for various departments, and Unity4 is hiring call centre operators that allow you to work from home.
IT, digital jobs
As the whole world moves to remote working, IT systems admin and IT call centre staff will be in demand.
“The biggest challenge stems from the lack of technology infrastructure and lack of comfort with new ways of working,” said Gartner vice president of research and advisory Aaron McEwan.
“We will also likely see demand for many technology jobs, such as web developers, programmers, and coders, increase as companies either take advantage of increased demand for virtual products and services or are forced to provide their services online.”
In early February, Amazon announced it was hiring more than 36,000 roles, with more than 300 based in Australia.
If you have skills in digital design such as user experience, website development, log o design or e-commerce, hop on to marketplace platforms such as Freelancer.com, Upwork, Fiverr or Airtasker. There will be hundreds of small business owners and sole traders who are looking to shift their business model online – and need help doing it.
Telco, call centre, customer service jobs
Telco companies will play a big role in ensuring Australians have the infrastructure to work from home.
Late last week, Telstra announced it was recruiting 1,000 temporary contractors to work in its call centres, and also put on pause planned job reductions.
TSA Telco group, a Telstra industry partner, is hiring for several customer service and sales call centre roles that allow you to work from home.
