Beachgoer 'headbutts, spits on' female cop after 'ignoring coronavirus rules'

A man has been charged after allegedly headbutting and spitting on a police officer who was enforcing coronavirus guidelines.

A 29-year-old man and 19-year-old woman visited Maroubra Beach in Sydney's east about 11.20am Monday when they allegedly abused lifeguards who informed them the beach was closed and reminded them of social distancing rules.

Police were called and shortly after an officer stopped the pair and attempted to arrest the man, who allegedly headbutted and spat on the female sergeant.

NSW Police said in a statement she suffered a laceration to her lip and swelling to her head.

The pair were arrested and the man was charged with assaulting police occasioning actual bodily harm, resisting arrest, offensive behaviour and failing to comply with terms of notice erected by council.

He was refused bail on Monday to reappear in court today.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott was outraged by the alleged incident.

"I've had a gutful of people abusing, harassing and assaulting our hardworking police officers who put their own safety on the line every day to protect the very people who attack them," he said in a police statement.

“If you choose to ignore a direction from police – one that is in place to save lives – then you can expect to be issued with a hefty fine or jail time.”
