Coles backflips on trolley ban at self-service checkouts

Coles has back flipped on the trolley ban at self-service checkouts.

“That’s concluded, that won’t be going ahead,” a Coles spokeswoman told Yahoo7 on Wednesday evening.

A day after it was confirmed, the supermarket has now dumped the controversial plan. Coles had been testing a trolley ban in self-serve checkouts in about twenty stores.

The intention was to unclog Coles’ checkouts, but a plan for baskets only in self-service angered customers.

However, Coles has abandoned the trial, telling stores to allow trolleys at self check-out on Wednesday.

“Many customers like to shop at our assisted checkouts because they offer convenience and efficiency in their shopping experience,” a Coles spokeswoman told Yahoo7.

“To improve service to customers and ease congestion, we ran a trial to limit trolleys in assisted checkout area in a very small number of stores, which has now ended.

“We’ve listened to our customers and will continue to allow shoppers to bring trolleys and baskets in our assisted checkouts.”

When the ban was initially announced, customers aired their grievances on social media. The unhappy customers argued that they could not carry all their groceries in their hands or with a basket.

“First bags now trolleys people should boycott your supermarkets as joke well instead of a weeks worth of shopping buy 1 or 2 items,” one Facebook user posted.

“No plastic bags, fair enough. Now no trolleys in the self service, can’t see it lasting. 12 items or less lanes, never enforced so how do you expect to enforce a trolley ban???” another social media user wrote.
