City rocked by massive earthquake
Hundreds of homes in Australia’s Top End were rocked by a massive 6.2 magnitude earthquake off the Banda Sea overnight.
The quake, which struck about 1.30am, was felt by at least 600 residents across Darwin and Palmerston, according to Geoscience Australia.
The Bureau of Meteorology assured residents in Australia’s north that there was no tsunami threat.
Locals told 7 News they were woken by “big shakes”.
“There was an earthquake here in Darwin,” PhD candidate Huda Sadid tweeted.
“The whole apartment shook.”
“This one is a long one, four minutes in and still feeling it,” resident Jasumati Patel said.
Geoscience Australia recorded the quake at a depth of 151km in the waters between Timor and the Indonesian island of Sulawesi.
The area, situated in the Ring of Fire, is infamous for devastating earthquakes.
