A spate of hot weather across the country has prompted Australians to expect a scorcher on Christmas day - but a late, cool change could see plans change.
While most capital cities have a balmy day forecast, a possible trough could bring a cooler weather to southeastern Australia.
Sydney is expecting a hot Christmas Eve at 35 degrees, but a late cool change could bring the mercury down to the mid-20s for Christmas Day with some showers.
“The Sydney forecast for Christmas Eve is currently 35C, so it could be a pretty hot night, depending on the timing of the cool change,” meteorologist Rob Sharpe told news.com.au.
“Western Sydney will be very hot like it is on Tuesday and Wednesday this week, with a forecast of 41C.”
Both Melbourne and Adelaide are expecting a mild Christmas day of 21C and 23C respectively.
This will be a welcome relief after a spate of weather in the high 30's for both cities in the lead-up to Christmas.
In Perth, major events including Carols by Candlelight and A Day on the Green were cancelled with an "unusual" pattern of storms rolling across the city.
But while a severe weather warning remains in place for the city over the coming days, it is expected to clear by Monday for a fine Christmas Day.

Perth is forecast to have a balmy top of 32 on Christmas day next Monday and a low of 16.
Most of Queensland are expecting a hot Christmas eve on Sunday, but a tropical low could bring cooler weather by Boxing Day with a chance of showers in Brisbane.
Hobart will have a top of 20 with a chance of showers.
Extreme fire risk conditions were declared for three South Australian districts on Monday with severe conditions in seven more amid a forecast of high temperatures.
NSW residents may also find it hard to sleep in the next few days with mercury not forecast to drop below the 30 mark until Thursday.
