New Year's opening hours: When Woolworths, Coles, Aldi and Westfield will trade

Australians are preparing to ring in a new decade.

Whether you’re racing to pick up a bottle of champagne before the clock strikes midnight, or stocking up for a New Year’s Day barbecue, here’s what is open across the country on New Year’s Eve and the first day of 2020.

Coles New Year’s opening hours

All Coles stores across the country will be open on New Year’s Eve, with a handful closing their doors on January 1.

NSW: Most stores will remain open for their normal trading hours on Tuesday, with the majority closing between 8 and 10pm.

All stores will be open on New Year’s Day apart from Smithfield in Sydney’s west.

On New Year’s Eve, last-minute shoppers can grab their groceries until the eleventh hour, with stores at Broadway, Crows Nest, Gungahlin, Hurstville and Tumut open until 11.59pm.

Stores in Broadway, Crows Nest, Gungahlin, Hurstville, Leichhardt, North Rocks and World Square will also remain open from 8am until 11.59pm on New Year’s Day.

A handful of shops will close their doors early on Wednesday, with Wagga Wagga and Glenfield Park closing up at 5pm. Glen Innes, Grafton, Lismore, St Mary’s, Thirroul and Tweed City will shut at 6pm.

Moss Vale, Mudgee, Merrylands and Toronto will end trading at 7pm.

Victoria: Again all stores will be open on New Year’s Eve, with the majority closing at 10pm.

Stores in Ardeer and Benalla will shut early at 8pm.

Ballarat, Barly Square and Brandon Park in Mulgrave will be open until 11.59pm for last-minute shoppers.

On New Year’s Day, 20 of the chain’s locations will be open until 11.59pm – including Burwood East, Caroline Springs, Essendon, Glenferrie, Horsham, Hoppers Crossing, Lynbrook, Malvern, Melbourne CBD, Melbourne Central, Moonee Ponds, Northcote, Oakleigh, Port Melbourne and Prahran.

The Geelong store will close early at 6pm on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Coles in Coburg on Victoria and Waterfield Streets will be closed on New Year’s Day, as well as Knox in Wantirna South.

Queensland: All Coles stores in Queensland will be open during normal hours on New Year’s Eve, shutting between 9 and 10pm, except for the Ayr store, which will also be closed on New Year’s Day.

The Goondiwindi and Mount Isa locations will also be shut on January 1.

All other stores will be open on New Year’s Day until 6pm, except for Cairns Central, Miami on the Gold Coast, Pacific Fair, Palm Beach and Surfers Paradise, which will all close at 9pm.

SA: All South Australian Coles stores will trade during normal hours on New Year’s Eve, with the majority closing at 9pm.

Most stores will be closed on New Year’s Day, excluding Berri, Mount Barker, Mount Gambier, Murray Bridge, Port Augusta, Port Lincoln, Port Pirie, Victor Harbor and Whyalla, which will all close at 8pm.

Grote St in Adelaide and Rundle Place will shut at 5pm on New Year’s Day.

WA: Most Western Australian locations will be open for their normal hours on New Year’s Day, closing at 9pm.

On New Year’s Day, both Coles shops in Kalgoorlie will be closed as well as the Narrogin and Tom Price locations.

A hefty majority of the grocery stores will close on New Year’s Day at 6pm – including Alexander Heights, Calcutta, Banksia Grove, Bassendean, Brighton, Caversham, Claremont, Ellenbrook, Flinders Square, Forest Lakes, Fremantle, Galleria, Gosnells, Greenwood, Hillarys, Inglewood, Innaloo Westfield, Joondalup, Kelmscott, Lakelands, Maylands, Midland, Mirrabooka, North Perth, Rockingham and Subiaco.

Albany, Albany Orana, Erskine, Geraldton, Halls Head, Mandurah Forum, Manjimup and Meadow Springs will close at 5pm.

Tasmania: All stores will be open for normal trading hours on New Year’s Eve, with special hours on New Year’s Day.

Stores in Bridgewater, Glenorchy, Meadow Mews, Newstead and Ulverstone will close at 9pm on January 1.

Charles Street, Eastlands in Rosny, Kingston, Mowbray and New Town, Racecourse, Sandy Bay, Wellington St in Launceston and Sorell will shut their doors at 10pm.

NT: All Northern Territory stores will also be open on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

The Bradshaw St location will close at 9pm on NYE, the rest will close at 10pm – excluding Palmerston, which closes at 11pm.

All NT stores will be open from 8am to 8pm on New Year’s Day.

Woolworths New Year’s opening hours

Most stores across the country will be open on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Queensland: The majority of Queensland locations appear to have normal operating hours over the holiday, with many of the stores closing up shop at 9pm on New Year’s Eve and 6pm on New Year’s Day.

NSW: Most NSW stores will be open during their normal trading hours on Tuesday, closing between 8 and 10pm depending on their location.

In Sydney, MetroGo Strawberry Hills, Metro George Street and Sydney Metcentre are closed for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

SA: Stores in Unley, Walkerville, Arkaba and Cumberland Park will be closed on New Year’s Day.

Rundle Mall’s Woolworths will close at 5pm, but other stores will keep their standard hours.

Stores in West Australia, Victoria, Tasmania and the Northern Territory are expected to operate as normal.

Aldi New Year’s opening hours

Aldi Australia’s store trading hours will vary over the holiday period.

NSW: All stores are open until 7pm on New Year’s Eve and 8pm on New Year’s Day.

Queensland: All stores will close at 7pm on New Year’s Eve and 6pm on New Year’s Day.

The Aldi in Kingaroy will be closed on New Year’s Day.

Victoria: Most stores across the state will be open until 7pm on New Year’s Eve and 8pm on January 1. Tarneit Central will remain open until 9pm. Brimbank will be closed on New Year’s Day.

SA: Stores open on New Year’s Day include Berri, Kadina, Mildura, Mt Barker, Mt Gambier, Murray Bridge, Nuriootpa, Port Pirie and Victor Harbor, while the rest will be shut.

All open shops will close at 5pm.

WA: All stores in the state will be have normal hours on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Aldi encourages shoppers to visit the supermarket giant’s website closer to the public holiday for information about their local store.

Westfield opening hours

All NSW and South Australia Westfields will be closed on New Year’s Day.

The majority of remaining Westfields will be open on New Year’s Day from 10am to 5pm.

Only WA’s Booragon (4pm) and Queensland’s Coomera and Helensvale (6pm) will close at different times.

Bottle shop opening hours

Coles’ liquor stores Liquorland, Vintage Cellars, First Choice, Liquor Market will all open on New Year’s Day with customers urged to check relevant store websites for specific details.

Dan Murphys’ customers are advised to check the website for specific store details regarding Christmas and New Year’s opening hours.
