Poolman, the directorial debut from Chris Pine, has confirmed its UK release date on Prime Video.

The comedy-mystery film follows a technician (Pine) who looks after a pool in LA, and soon uncovers a water heist plot, with the film paying homage to the neo-noir classic Chinatown.

The film is due to be released in cinemas in the US this week (May 10), but it has a different fate in the UK, as it will go straight to streaming on Prime Video, with the release date confirmed for June 7.

In addition to Pine, the cast for Poolman includes Annette Bening, DeWanda Wise, Clancy Brown, Stephen Tobolowsky, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Danny DeVito, with Pine co-writing the script with Ian Gotler.

Ahead of the film’s release next month, the first reviews have dropped in, but they haven’t been positive, as it only secured a measly 21% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from its first 28 reviews.

You can read a selection of reviews below:

The AV Club

“A film that so deeply misunderstands what normal people like about the movies that it could have only come from someone who’s never done anything else.”

Screen International

“Poolman will mostly baffle viewers with a shallow plot that wants to salute Chinatown and the LA noir but ultimately confuses reams of dialogue with a screenplay.”

“Not only the worst film I saw during the fall festival season but would likely be one of the worst films in any year it came out.”

“It’s only 100 minutes long, but upward of 99 of those minutes are likely to be spent in silent boredom, if not irritated disbelief at being subjected to such guileless, artless nonsense.”

The Hollywood Reporter

Goes tonally off the rails from the start and proceeds to hit bottom with excruciating momentum, dragging a game ensemble down for the count.”

Poolman is released in the US on May 10 and in the UK on Prime Video on June 7.
