A mother and her 10-year-old son have been allegedly dragged along the road as a young male attempted to steal their car in northern Queensland.

Queensland Police are on the hunt for the juvenile, who is believed to have approached the car along Fitzgerald St in the Townsville suburb of Kirwan about 4.30pm on Monday before allegedly driving off with the car.

A Queensland Police spokesperson said the 41-year-old woman and her young son tried to “prevent” the theft and sustained minor injuries.

“The woman and boy tried to prevent the theft however were dragged a short distance by the car before losing their grip,” the spokesperson said.

Both were transported to Townsville University Hospital suffering from abrasions sustained during the incident.

The allegedly stolen car was found more than an hour later abandoned nearby along Cranbrook St.

Queensland Police have described the young man as of First Nations appearance, wearing a red bandana, dark clothing and a black satchel at the time of the theft.

“Police are appealing to anyone who may have dash-camera footage or CCTV from Fitzgerald Crescent at the time of the theft to contact them,” a spokesperson said.
