Man still has unopened gift from girlfriend who broke up with him 47 years ago
Most people would probably find it hard to resist an unopened gift, but one Canadian man has been staring at a present each Christmas for 47 years - deciding to leave it all wrapped up.
Adrian Pearce, who lives in Edmonton, has no idea what is inside the paper package which is becoming more tattered and faded as the years pass.
He received the present when he was 17-years-old from his then girlfriend, named Vicky Allen - but her timing was a little unusual.
"She broke up with me at this time of the year in 1970 and that was when she gave me the gift," he explained in a Facebook post.
"She left me for an older guy named Wolf who she called Wolfie."
He had put the gift from Vicki under the tree and told his family he was "never going to open that present," CBC News reports.
A few years after they broke up Mr Pearce had been given three phone numbers for Vicki from her sister.
One had been for Vicki, another for Sears, possibly her former workplace, and the third was thought to be her parent's number.
The pair briefly reconnected in 1977 but discovered they had little in common with one another anymore.
But a few days ago Mr Pearce found the phone numbers again and tried to dial each one.
"I called each number yesterday using three different Toronto area codes but all three numbers are out of service. The numbers are 40 years old after all," he wrote online.
He told CBC News he used to be known by his middle name, Mike, in those days.
According to the news outlet Mr Pearce continued to place the unopened present under his tree - even after he got married and had children but his wife eventually said it was no longer welcome there.
While his wife is a little intrigued by the mystery as well, in recent years Mr Pearce has just taken the gift out to look at it before putting it away again.
"Even though I vowed 47 years ago to never open the gift, I might consider doing so on the 50th anniversary," he wrote online.
"The icing on the cake (so to speak) would be finding this woman and having her join the celebration!"
As a Christmas wish Mr Pearce asked his Facebook friends to share a post about the unopened present in the hope the gift giver can be found.
