Call the Midwife viewers are looking ahead to the departure of long-time star Olly Rix, with Matthew heavily rumoured to leave the show at the end of series 13.

Fans have already criticised Matthew's storyline recently, but they're now predicting something dark at the end of it.

We've watched Matthew's money troubles mount and, on Sunday's episode, he had to confess everything to Trixie (Helen George). She finally learned just how much trouble her husband was in.

This week's episode of Call the Midwife saw Matthew ousted by the rest of the Aylward Estate board, cutting off his influence and also his salary, pointing out he'd put the company £250,000 in the hole.

He tearfully confessed all of this to Trixie, saying: "I can fix most things, can't I? But I can't make this better. Believe me, I've tried. And I've failed." His supportive wife, though, said she'd be by his side for better or worse, even when it emerged that Nonnatus House itself was at risk.

Devoted viewers on Twitter are worried about how Matthew's final storyline will play out and are concerned that his money troubles might lead to even greater tragedy. Some fans are convinced that Matthew is hiding a secret health condition, while others fear that the character might take his own life.

While some fans are speculating about the possible tragedy at the end of the storyline, others are upset that this is the way one of the most popular Call the Midwife characters is being written out of the show.

Many of us might be enjoying the heart-breaking drama for which Call the Midwife has become known, but there are some fans very disappointed that it doesn't look as if Matthew and Trixie have a happily ever after ending in their immediate future.

There's a long wait ahead for fans who want to see what might happen next, with Call the Midwife off-air next Sunday. BBC One is showing the Bafta Film Awards instead, bumping the episode back by a week.

Ominously, the trailer for next week's episode included a suggestion that Matthew might be exploring another business opportunity. It doesn't take a detective to work out that he might be on course for even more misery as a result.

What else happened on Call the Midwife?

This week's episode also saw the pupil midwives thrilled to pass their exams, while child welfare officer Cyril had to make a very tough decision around the future of two young boys found abandoned in a church. There are now just two episode of the series left in the latest run of telly's most tear-jerking show.

Call the Midwife returns to BBC One at 8pm on Sunday 25 February.
