Authorities are searching for a drive-by shooter who killed a woman sitting in a car near an East Los Angeles elementary school.
Lexus Gutierrez, 22, was sitting in with her friends on the morning of Jan. 21 when someone fired a shot from another car, according to reports from KABC, KCAL and KTLA, citing authorities and family members.
Gutierrez was shot in the head while sitting in the passenger’s seat, while a person sitting in the driver’s seat was shot in the hand, the outlets reported. Another passenger was uninjured in the attack.
The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department is investigating the shooting, the outlets reported. KTLA reported that the department says the shots came from a Honda SUV and that they hope the two other passengers can help identify the shooting suspects.
Gutierrez’s family started a GoFundMe to raise money in the wake of the shooting.
“As the first daughter, [Lexus] became a role model and protective big sister, always looking out for her siblings with unmatched love and care,” the organizer wrote. “Her presence also brought a unique light into the lives of her friends, being the first granddaughter and the firstborn niece, she held a special place in the hearts of her grandparents, uncles, aunts, and friends.
The GoFundMe has raised over $19,000.

Gutierrez’s aunt Patricia Ramirez spoke to KCAL about the unidentified suspect or suspects.
"Please, if you have any compassion, please turn yourself in," Ramirez said. "Please, maybe you weren't in your right mind when it happened, but please turn yourself in. It's not going to bring Lexus back, but it's going to bring some kind of closure to her mom."
The outlet reported that Gutierrez was the oldest of three siblings and was studying to be a nurse.
