'Heartbreaking': Caged dog found in freezing lake

A dog has been rescued after she was found caged and floating in a freezing lake.

The little pooch was spotted by Bryant Fritz last week while he was fishing in Kaufman Lake, Champaign south of Chicago recently, WCIA 3 News reports.

Mr Fritz got into the waist-deep water and pulled the dog out.

“I just saw an animal in need, and I just figured that by the time that somebody else got her it would be too late,” Mr Fritz told WCIA 3 News.

He believes the dog had been trapped for hours.

It’s not known how she ended up in the cage or in the lake.

She was taken to University of Illinois Veterinary Hospital for treatment for hypothermia and a number of wounds.

Dr Jenica Harashak said on Monday the dog is doing well.

“She is a sweetheart and has been receiving lots of love and attention,” Dr Harashak said.

Mr Fritz, whose dog recently died, is hoping once she recovers he can adopt the dog.

Photos of the pooch were shared by Queensland-based animal rescue Kitt Kat Care.

People were horrified and appalled by the dog’s treatment.

“This is heartbreaking. How can someone be so evil?” one woman wrote.

Another woman called it “sick and disgusting”.

“That poor pup looks absolutely heartbroken and destroyed,” another woman wrote.
