C-3PO's red eyes in the new 'Rise of Skywalker' footage have everyone guessing

You probably didn't recognize him because of the red eyes.

Disney's D23 footage released on Monday of the upcoming Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker left us with more than a couple teasers: Star Destroyers. The voice of Emperor Palpatine. Dark Rey. An intense lightsaber battle. Dark. Rey. And if that weren't enough, Twitter also caught a frame that showed a slight change in appearance of one familiar, gold-plated face.

Yep. C-3PO, our favorite odds-telling, doesn't-know-when-to-shut-up hot mess of a protocol droid, is back for the final installment of the Skywalker saga. And if one shot making the rounds on social media is any indication, he's having a bit of a glow-up moment.

The reason for Threepio's red eyes have sparked a number of theories. And even Anthony Daniels, who plays C-3PO in the films, got in on the action.

But for the most part fans' thoughts about what's caused his eyes to turn red fall into three main camps.

1. He's pissed off, dammit.

2. He's actually the key to everything.

3. C-3PO is actually...C-Weed-PO?

Threepio didn't know there was this much green in the whole galaxy. And he's taking full advantage by making the jump to hyperspace, if you catch our drift. Decades of galactic conflict can be stressful, OK?
