Busy weekend for Saskatoon police investigators: 4 stabbings, a shooting, assault on 2 officers
Police are investigating several weekend crimes, including multiple stabbings, a shooting and an assault on two of their officers, the Saskatoon Police Service says.
Friday
Officers were called to the 100 block of 4th Avenue North at about 8:15 p.m. on Friday.
Police say two women dressed in black approached an 18-year-old and her friend, attacking them with a hatchet. The 18-year-old was sent to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Saturday
On Saturday at about 7 a.m., members of the police bike unit found two people sitting at an open fire along the Saskatchewan River. While the two were being questioned about a possible bylaw violation, they they attacked the two officers and tried to disarm them.
A man and woman, both 26-years-old, were taken into custody. They are now facing charges including assaulting a police officer and attempting to take a weapon. The man is also facing charges for possession of methamphetamine, fentanyl and breaching court conditions.
The officers suffered minor injuries, according to police.
At about 9 p.m., police received a report that two women approached a girl, 16, on Queen Street near Saskatoon City Hospital, then stabbed and beat her. She was transported to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Police do not believe the attack was random.
The police canine team discovered the victim's bag, which had been left nearby, before leading officers to a nearby home where one of the suspects was arrested. Police continue to search for the second suspect.
Sunday
On Sunday at about 2:30 p.m., police were called to the 200 block of 2nd Avenue South where a man, 60, had been stabbed. He was transported to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Police say his assailant is believed to be in his 30s, about five feet 10 inches tall, with a goatee and Mohawk-styled haircut, according to video surveillance. He was wearing a black hoodie with large graffiti print.
At 3:30 p.m., police received a call about a man, 36, injured outside a home in the 500 block of Avenue P North. He was sent to hospital with a non-life-threatening injury. Police did not specify how he was injured.
Monday
At about 12:30 a.m., police were called to the 1500 block of 20th Street West, near Prairie Harm Reduction, where they found a man, 42, with a non-life threatening gunshot wound. Police did not say whether he was taken to hospital, and offered no details about a shooter.
