Buskers turning to EFTPOS to keep afloat in the new 'cashless society'

A frustrated but innovative Adelaide busker has turned to offering EFTPOS payments for his street performances.

Peter Clayton, who plays guitar and sings, said the move towards a cashless society “is starting to bite”.

He sometimes puts coins in his guitar case “because there’s nothing worse” than looking at an empty one.

Fellow busker Skyla Morgan said Adelaide’s street artists “are finding it an increasingly empty experience, without the accompaniment of clinging coins”.

But Mr Clayton has taken action and is pioneering the Adelaide version of a trial first carried out in Melbourne.

“If someone wants to give me something, hopefully after I finish the song, (I) enter an amount on the phone, and they just payWave,” he said.

He’s hoping this will be the way of the future for people who want to show their appreciation for street performers – and based on one young fan’s thoughts, it’s looking likely.

“He plays very good music,” the boy said.
