Two people, including a child, have been injured after a bull broke loose at a regional rodeo and charged at the crowd.

It happened at the Kununurra Rodeo in Western Australia’s East Kimberly on Saturday night, just as a large crowd of people was line dancing in the middle of an arena.

Vision of the incident shared on social media shows people dancing before screams can be heard; the crowd scatters as a small bull ploughs into the group, knocking some people to the ground.

People race for the fences at the outside of the arena to escape the animal.

“The animal was swiftly and professionally removed from the arena by event officials,” said the Kununurra Campdraft and Rodeo and Association Inc (KCRA) in a statement.

A man, aged in his 30s, and a young girl were taken to Kununurra Hospital as a precaution with minor injuries.

The KCRA is now conducting an investigation into how the bull managed to escape.

“The KCRA is committed to the safety and welfare of attendees, participants and animals, and works hard to ensure the event strictly adheres to the Code of Practice for the Conduct of Rodeos, which is a requirement of the Western Australian Government,” reads its statement.

The event was part of the Ord Valley Muster, an annual festival held in the East Kimberley featuring “dining under the stars, music, yoga boats, comedy, storytelling, rodeo and more,” according to its website.
