Broke student living on diet of instant noodles ends up in hospital

A student living on a diet of instant noodles to save money for online shopping has ended up in hospital.

The Chinese student, named Hong Jia, saved almost $150 in the past month through her thrifty diet and had been eating two-minute noodles for several weeks.

The woman hoped to spend her money online shopping on Singles Day, China’s version of Black Friday on November 11.

However, she lost her savings when she was struck by a high fever and went to hospital. The medical bills set her back over $200, wiping out her noodle-related savings.

“The IV drips cost me more than 1,000 yuan ($198) and medicine cost more than 100 yuan ($19),” she told reporters, according to the NZ Herald.

Ms Jia gained attention in China after it emerged that she had been surviving on instant minute noodles since October 15.
