Boy, 8, from Sydney found dead at luxury Fiji resort

Authorities are investigating the tragic death of an 8-year-old boy who was killed while on holiday at a luxury resort in Fiji.

The holiday horror unfolded last week on Denarau Island, a popular travel destination for Australians that is sprinkled with high-end resorts. According to TripAdvisor, the island "offers luxury tourism at its finest".

The young boy, who lives in Sydney, was reportedly on holiday with his family when he was found motionless near a garden bed at Club Wyndham Resort in Fiji on Thursday.

An elderly guest is understood to have found the boy on their way back from the pool, Nine News reported. He was rushed to Nadi Hospital but was pronounced dead by nursing staff.

Police reveal grim theory over boy's death

Police believe the boy was electrocuted, with a Fiji police spokesperson telling media that a post-mortem examination would soon confirm the cause of death.

The hotel has expressed deep sympathy for the family in the wake of the tragedy.

"We have expressed our heartfelt condolences to the family and our thoughts remain with them at this time," a Wyndham spokesperson said in a statement shared with media.

"Our management team is currently conducting a thorough investigation into the incident and co-operating with the police and authorities."

While the boy lived in Australia, it's been confirmed he was a New Zealand citizen.

A New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson confirmed that officials were supporting the boy's family, the ABC reported.

"We are aware of the death of a child in Denarau and are providing assistance to the family," they said.
