A body found floating on a busy river in view of homes and a road on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast has sparked an urgent investigation.

Police were called to the Maroochy River after a member of the public reported a body near Bradman Ave about 8.30am on Thursday.

A police spokesman said detectives were still investigating the shock find and were yet to reveal if it was being treated as suspicious.

Paramedics and firefighting crews were pictured assisting in retrieving the body, which has not been formally identified, from the river.

It comes as police suspend their search for Matthew Balange, 43, who went missing during a solo fishing trip near Moreton Island, further south, on Sunday.

Mr Balange’s vessel was found abandoned two nautical miles off the northern tip of Moreton Island on Monday sparking a frantic search.

Police Search and Rescue Coordinator Senior Constable Murray Lyons said the outcome was heartbreaking for the Mr Balange’s family.

“Despite our best efforts, we have been unable to locate the man and bring him home to his loved ones,” Senior Constable Lyons said.

“We have liaised closely with his family and discussed the sad news regarding the likelihood of survival; they have asked for privacy.”
