Body cam shows shocking moment distracted driver ploughs into parked car

A group of Queensland motorists are lucky to have escaped injury after a distracted driver ploughed into a parked car, before spinning out of control.

Police were at the scene of an earlier crash on the Warrego Highway in North Ipswich on Friday morning when further chaos unfolded, all of which was captured on a police-worn body camera.

It shows the moment the truck smashes into the parked car near the grassed median strip.

“He was lucky no one was seriously hurt and escaped with minor injuries himself,” a Queensland police spokesperson said.

Queensland Police says the vision serves as a timely reminder as to how quickly things can go wrong.

“When you’re travelling on the roads this holiday season, be aware of your surroundings and get home safely,” the spokesperson added.

“Driving distracted is a Fatal Five for a very good reason.”

Double demerit points start today

Drivers are being urged to take care and slow down on the roads as double demerit points kick off in some states today.

Each state is different but a strong focus has been placed on speeding, seatbelt, mobile phone and motorcycle helmet offences.

While Queensland does not introduce double demerit points during holiday periods, double demerits apply all year-round for repeat offenders.

Drivers caught using their phones could lose their licence in NSW after the state government earlier this year increased the demerit point penalty from four points to five.

This means that if you are caught using your phone behind the wheel during the holiday period you could be penalised 10 demerit points, on top of a $337 fine.
