Big Madeleine McCann update, region's 250mm rain warning: Australia news live

There was also an ugly moment that has marred Queensland's impressive State of Origin win.

Yahoo's live news blog has now concluded for Thursday, June 6.

There is a major breakthrough in the Madeleine McCann case as investigators claim to have an email account linking their main suspect to her disappearance.

Queensland's 38-10 State of Origin victory over NSW was marred by the ugly moment Reece Walsh appeared to lose consciousness after copping a shoulder to the head from Joseph Suaalii who has received a four-game suspension for the tackle.

And Alex de Minaur has crashed out of the French Open after losing his quarter-final tie with Alexander Zverev in straight sets.

NSW is in the midst of a brutal 24 hours with some regions feared to cop up to 250mm of rain in just a day.

Major Madeleine McCann development revealed in court

In a major development in the Madeleine McCann case, German detectives claim investigators have found an email account linking prime suspect Christian Brueckner to the British girl's disappearance.

Titus Stampa told a court emails on a Hotmail account used by suspect Brueckner ‘directly’ link him to the case.

Brueckner, 47, is on trial in Germany for unrelated sex crimes. He denies involvement in Madeleine’s disappearance from Praia da Luz in Portugal in 2007.

  • Residents leave tiny island as water levels rise

Hundreds of residents on a tiny island off Panama are having to leave due to rising sea levels.

“We’re a little sad, because we’re going to leave behind the homes we’ve known all our lives, the relationship with the sea, where we fish, where we bathe and where the tourists come, but the sea is sinking the island little by little,” one young woman leaving the island said.

The government has not forced anyone to leave and some have said they will stay until it's no longer possible to. When that time comes is unknown, with storms regularly filling its few streets with water.

  • Parents' $5k deal for teen kids

There's growing concern Australian kids are addicted to their phones and social media.

States are ramping up their push to raise the age children can use apps such as Facebook and Instagram, but one Australian mother has revealed her creative way to try and get her three teens to stay off social media.

Rhiannon told the ABC she has offered her children aged 15, 13 and 11 $5,000 each if they stay off social media until they finish year 12.

The oldest child has turned down the money in favour of Snapchat use, while the 13-year-old is set on the money. The 11-year-old's decision surely won't be far off.

"It really does make me question my parenting and whether I should conform to the majority, but I have this strong instinct that keeps me going for the health and safety of my children. And they'll thank me one day," Rhiannon said.

  • Water pipe discovered at top of famous Chinese waterfall

There's controversy surrounding a spectacular waterfall in China after it emerged it wasn't as natural as first thought.

A flowing pipe has been spotted and filmed at the top of the 300-metre Yuntai waterfall in Henan province, a site wildly popular with tourists.

The discovery sparked plenty of anger on Chinese social site Weibo, prompting authorities to admit to the pipe's installation and revealed it was to ensure water continued to flow throughout dry periods.

Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii has declared he ‘let my brothers down’ in the wake of a four-game suspension which could end his State of Origin career after just seven minutes.

The NSW centre was given the hefty ban for his sickening shot that knocked Queensland star Reece Walsh out of the contest.

The Blues centre became just the sixth player to be sent off in Origin history – as well as the earliest to be marched from the field – when he launched out of the line and whacked the fullback high and late.

If you're out for breakfast and and an influencer starts an impromptu photoshoot next to you, how would you react?

Well for one popular Gold Coast cafe, they said it wasn't fair on their customers and asked Aussie Karina Irby to wrap it up.

Palm Springs Cafe in Burleigh Heads, known for its trendy Californian desert aesthetic, told the Daily Mail it doesn't allow professional shoots during opening hours and the premises can instead be rented out.

'Not everyone wants to be in the background of a photoshoot," they said.

However Irby, who has more than one million Instagram followers, thought she was within her rights to take a few photos for her clothing brand.

"I thought I could order a bunch of yummy food and drinks, eat and have the girls representing Moana Smile Club at this local café," she said online.
