High-end restaurant apologises for 'sexist' dress code: 'Disgusting'
A new upscale restaurant has apologised for publishing a “sexist” dress code on its website.
Beluga Bar, a sushi restaurant in Surrey, UK, was slammed by social media users this week after its list of rules went viral.
The dress code suggests women should “wear skinny jeans with a sexy black ankle-strap heels and with a form-fitting top”.
“Alternatively, there are many different types of dresses that would look good at a bar in the summer or winter, namely a midi or body con dresses [sic],” it reads, The Mirror reports.
Men are encouraged to wear jackets and won’t be allowed in if they’re in a t-shirt or tracksuit.
Dress code is 'disgusting and sexist'
The restrictions sparked a massive response online, with social media users deeming the dress code “disgusting and sexist”.
"Never in a million years! Your dress code is appallingly misogynistic. If this is how you treat your customers, I pity your employees,” one person wrote.
"Very 1980s pervy strip club dress code. Won’t be visiting anytime soon,” another said.
Restaurant issues apology
Beluga Bar apologised for the terms and conditions “mistakenly” published on their website.
“The description was inappropriate, disrespectful and offensive and does not reflect the image we’re seeking to promote,” its Instagram statement reads.
“We wish to clarify that our policy is a smart dress code for men and women.”
The restaurant, which had its soft opening on Friday, said it hopes to have a positive impact on the community.
“Once again, we are wholeheartedly apologising for any offence and upset that we have caused.”
