The first drop of snow for the year has hit ski resorts in Victoria and NSW, with up to 5cm of cover at Perisher.

According to Weatherzone, a cold front swept across southeast Australia which saw snowfall overnight that kept tumbling down until about 9am on Tuesday morning.

“A heavy band of moisture crossed the alpine region just before 9am,” Weatherzone said.

“Intrepid Snowy Mountains local Steve Smith got out the winter boots and hiked up the slopes of Perisher on Tuesday morning, getting as far as the Mid-station restaurant, where the tables revealed about a beer can’s depth of accumulation.”

Thredbo ski resort reported on social media: “Someone must’ve shaken up our snow globe overnight. Winter mode has been well and truly activated.

“Winter has arrived and Mother Nature wants everyone to know it.

“It was snowing all the way down to the village from the early hours until midday today.

“The first snow day of the year always gives us all the feels.”

Weatherzone also reported that snow fell in Victoria, covering the ground about 1600 metres above sea level.

“Melbourne is heading for a top of just 16C today, which would make it the coldest day of the year to date,” they said.

Mount Hotham ski resort recorded 4cm of snow with the thermometer plummeting to a chilly -2C.

“There was a light dusting on the ground this morning with fresh flakes falling,” the ski resort wrote on Instagram.

“Three to four centimetres snow depth at Hotham and temperatures down to -2C, bring on the 2024 snow season.”

Mount Buller reminded its followers that while the first flakes had fallen there were still 60 days to the start of the season.

“A dusting to mark 60 days countdown to the long weekend,” they said on Instagram.
