Infant killed in horrific crash after truck collides with multiple cars

A child has been killed in a horror multi-vehicle crash on a highway in Melbourne's northeast.

At about 2.30pm on Monday, a truck carrying grain collided with a number of vehicles on the Calder Freeway near the Diggers Rest-Bulla Road overpass, Victoria Police said.

A passenger in the rear of a car carrying four people died at the scene.

The ABC reported the victim was a child and the other passengers were the infant's mother, father and another child, two of which were in critical condition and taken to hospital.

Nine News reported the deceased child was one year old.

A man in another vehicle was trapped underneath the truck and wasn't freed until emergency services arrived at the scene. He was also taken to hospital in a critical condition.

Two other people in another vehicle did not sustain any serious injuries in the crash.

The circumstances of the crash is being investigated by the Major Collision Investigation Unit and police said the male truck driver is in police custody and is assisting police with their enquiries.
